“Covid-19 is proving to be an incredible catalyst for science and discovery and innovation,”
“If we could do the same for education – harnessing new technologies with the power of government and private sector funding, and the energy and the drive of millions of talented young people – it would be one of the greatest single inoculations imaginable against poverty and the denial of rights worldwide.”
Around 1.5 billion children in more than 150 countries are out of school, compared with around 260 million worldwide before the coronavirus crisis.
“This funding will ensure that children can continue to benefit from education during school closures, and will mean teachers can provide vital outreach to get children back to school once they reopen.
“We know that supporting every child’s right to 12 years of quality education is one among the simplest investments we will make to finish the cycle of displacement, poverty, and conflict as we recover from coronavirus.”
Now a Days, While many teachers providing an enriching experience, others don't have technical skills or hardly interacting with kids in real-time at all. Some kids lacking strong internet connections or family members with the time or know-how to help.
“Distance learning across the country is pretty much a failure,”
“We are struggling, and I’m looking to other districts that are doing it better than us.”
But with just five weeks of summer left, teachers don’t know how many hours they’ll be required to teach or how much of it should be conducted in real-time. There’s no plan to bring the neediest children back to campus despite everybody agreeing that should happen. The city has not figured out a plan for child care for parents who require it.
“We know this technology is extremely important from job training skills and future academic skills, but I feel it’s absolutely essential for our education system,”
Now this disruption in education has been sped up dramatically by COVID-19, but there's more work to be done. To truly create best-of-breed higher ed, we'll need a replacement ecosystem. Specifically, we'll need the following Suggestions for strengthening distance education in India:
- Aggregators will be able to provide the degree layer. This degree layer is essentially the platform that'll issue your diploma and manage the education experience. Indian Education Ministry needs to make a new institutional body that can manage online certifications and degrees without any fraud so that existing universities could expand online to become aggregators.
- New tuition models. With a best of breed model, you may pay Rs. 22,000 for that psychology general ed class and Rs. 88,000 for computer science. Some classes will be free. Perhaps you'll pay different rates based on the quality of the instructor. Today, you pay per semester hour no matter the category. Students are going to be ready to manage costs by arranging their curriculum supported a budget. Another model would revolve around subscriptions that would cover post-grad training too.
- Content providers that rate and curate courses. Online courses could evolve into more of a media company over time. Channels like Kidsee is another option.
- Software providers to improve the experience. Augmented reality and computer games should have a task in higher ed (at least for labs) but the ecosystem isn't fully baked yet. New collaboration platforms and learning management systems are going to be needed. These next-gen systems will be got to stitch together individual universities.
- Electronic education records that might mimic electronic medical records. These electronic transcripts might be shared among universities and employers and highlight an individual's portfolio of skills inside and out of doors the university structure. Think CV meets resume meets transcript in real-time.
At its Google For India event, held virtually on Monday, the tech major announced new initiatives for driving education in India. The company will partner Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to digitize classrooms across the country.
Google said it will work with CBSE Skill Education and Training by the end of 2020 to allow close to one million teachers in 22,000 schools in India to "deliver blended learning that combines the classroom approach with online learning."
The company will provide its software like G Suite for Education, Google Classroom, YouTube, and more to allow such digitization. G Suite for Education includes Google’s usual tools, like Google Docs, Sheets, and more. It also includes ways for teachers to give assignments to students and use Google Forms.
The company will also provide a $1 million grant to the Kaivalya Education Foundation (KEF) through the Global Distance Learning Fund that is part of Google.org, aimed at helping teachers deliver virtual education to students in the country. Google says the initiative "empowers" 700,000 teachers over the next year to deliver virtual education and learning from home.
It will partner public broadcasting agency, Prasar Bharti, for an edutainment series meant for small and medium-sized businesses in the country. It’s worth noting that Google sells Chromebook laptops worldwide, which have largely been driven towards schools and educational institutions.
Google also announced a ₹75,000 crore (approximately $10 billion) Google for India Digitisation Fund today. The fund will be invested in the country over the next five to seven years and is separate from the $1 million investment from Google.org mentioned above.
“We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, partnership investments, and operational, infrastructure, and ecosystem investments. This is
Google isn’t the only company investing in India’s education sector though. Fellow Silicon Valley giant Facebook had also announced a partnership with CBSE to launch a certified curriculum on digital safety, online well being, and augmented reality for students in the country.
